How Your Government Illegally Spies On You And Gets Away With It...

Edward Snowden Reveals How They Spy on You

In this 2016 conversation hosted by Thinkable Events in Sydney, Edward Snowden reflects on surveillance, democracy, whistleblowing, privacy, journalism, and the real cost of state power. Speaking years after the 2013 NSA revelations, Snowden looks back on his journey from working inside the CIA and NSA to becoming one of the most consequential whistleblowers of the modern era.

Edward Snowden within his answer to a question in this 2016 interview:

"Barack Obama campaigned on a platform of investigating the Bush era of abuses of the law, of torture, of mass surveillance. Within one month of becoming president he said, he sort of completely changed his tune and said 'We need to look forward, and not backward'. Well, of course every investigation is necessarily retrospective looking, right? Your not investigating the future unless you're in the world of 'Minority Report', which thanks to mass surveillance we're actually pretty close to, but that's beside the point. The thing is, he realized that if he investigated the president, he himself might face the risk of being investigated. If we are ever to have a truly just, truly fair society, we have to make sure that we enforce the laws just as strongly for the most powerful among us, as we do for the most vulnerable among us, and unfortunately I think it's fair to say as you look at it, your right, that's not the case today."

America's Surveillance State

Complete 6-Part Documentary Series

Mass Surveillance is the focus of this 6 part investigative documentary series examining who is watching whom and why.

We live in the United States of Surveillance – with cameras positioned on every street corner and much more invisible spying online and on the phone. Anyone paying attention knows that privacy is dead. All of this is not happening by accident – well funded powerful agencies and companies are engaged in the business of keeping tabs on what we do, what we say, and what we think.

To many in the world today, the face of America also has a big nose for sniffing and sifting mountains of data – phone calls, emails and texts. And with many mouths silenced by paranoia to keep what they decide is secret, secret. America has become a Surveillance-Industrial State where everyone’s business has become its business, and where one huge US intelligence Agency has been given the sanction and unlimited amounts of money to spy on the whole world.

In a country that describes itself as a democracy and the leader of the free world it's an enormous problem for the government to know more about the people than the people know about what the government's doing. But since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 a lot of the legal restraints that kept the government in check after a previous era of abuse were relaxed or removed completely in many cases.
